Most researchers in the field of Technology-Enhanced Learning dream of developing cutting-edge technology that can have a real impact on learning at schools. Nevertheless, for most of us, this dream never come true. In this talk, we will discuss how it is possible to carry out research that produce important scientific advancements to achieve robust learning and use it to create innovative technologies that can really impact students, teachers and the whole educational systems. Initially, we will present the state of the art on research related to technology-enhanced learning. Then, we will show how research can be introduced into the development cycle of innovative applications to create solutions with unique advantages to compete in the market. Finally, we will give our personal experience on applying this methodology to create two startup companies in Brazil that have won several innovation awards and improved the learning performance of about 50.000 students.
